Society For Science And The Public
Chapter 3 looks at public and scientists’ attitudes on each of these issues in more detail along with several topics asked only of the general public, including access to experimental medical treatments, bioengineering and genetic modifications. While a majority of the public sees U.S. scientific achievements in positive terms, the share saying U.S. scientific achievements are the best in the world or above average is down 11 points to 54% today, compared with 65% in 2009. Despite broadly similar views about the overall place of science in America, citizens and scientists often see science-related issues through different sets of eyes. 75% of AAAS scientists say too little STEM education for grades K-12 is a major factor in the public’s limited knowledge about science. An overwhelming majority of scientists see the public’s limited scientific knowledge as a problem for science.
The Society for Science names 66 educators tasked with guiding students in science research and competitions through the Advocate Program. The Society strives to educate and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators, and supports full representation of all identities in STEM fields. Society for Science & the Public today announced that National Geographic Society will be a sponsor of the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair , the world’s largest pre-college science and engineering competition. The general public tends to hold mixed views about the degree to which they believe there is scientific consensus on three hot-button science topics — the “Big Bang” theory, climate change and evolution. The modest difference over time stems from more expressing an opinion today than did so five years ago. A 2013 Pew Research report found the military at the top of the list of 10 occupational groups seen as contributing “a lot” to society (78%), followed by teachers (72%), medical doctors (66%), scientists (65%) and engineers (63%).
Society for Science & the Public promotes science education through many programs that benefit students, teachers and the public in general. With the assistance of outstanding sponsors, science research is recognized with international science fair activities and talent search opportunities with first-class organization. As a high school student from a rural county in North Florida, I was an international science fair winner forty years ago. I wanted other students in my little rural county high school to have the same opportunity I had, so I returned there to teach science courses with a research component.
Nonprofit Explorer has organizations claiming tax exemption in each of the 27 subsections of the 501 section of the tax code, and which have filed a Form 990, Form 990EZ or Form 990PF. Taxable trusts and private foundations that are required to file a form 990PF are also included. Every organization that has been recognized as tax exempt by the IRS has to file Form 990 every year, unless they make less than $200,000 in revenue and have less than $500,000 in assets, in which case they have to file form 990-EZ. Organizations making less than $50,000 don’t have to file either form but do have to let the IRS they’re still in business via a Form 990N “e-Postcard.” Glassdoor has salaries, wages, tips, bonuses, and hourly pay based upon employee reports and estimates. BBB Wise Giving Alliance provides charity reports, which help donors review charities and find a trustworthy charity to support. We also conduct charity assessments to help charities improve their practices and demonstrate trust.
SSP is making a REAL DIFFERENCE in science education in schools across the country, and I can’t think of a better investment of funds by an individual or organization. The future of our budding science students, and equitable science education across the US, depends on it. Compared with five years ago, both citizens and scientists are less upbeat about the scientific enterprise.
Make available to all, on request, complete annual financial statements prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. When total annual gross income exceeds $500,000, these statements should be audited in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $500,000, a review by a certified public accountant is sufficient to meet this standard. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $250,000, an internally produced, complete financial statement is sufficient to meet this standard. Have a board policy of assessing, no less than every two years, the organization’s performance and effectiveness and of determining future actions required to achieve its mission. The Public Service Award is presented to individuals and groups each year that have contributed substantially to increasing public understanding of science and engineering.
It was a truly memorable and inspiring meeting and we spoke about the Research Teachers Conference, Society for Science and Public, Regeneron, and STEM Education. He also appreciated the partnership of Regeneron with the Society for Science and Public in sponsoring the 2017 Research Teachers Conference and the Regeneron Science Talent Search. The Senator actively listened to our active thoughts and proposals for STEM education in the country in general and in Georgia in particular. He assured us of his support to further strengthening the STEM education in the State. What a wonderful thought it was for the Senator’s office to present us with delicious and nutritious peanuts of Georgia, the peanut capital of the world.
The Society is granting $165,000 in microgrants through the STEM Action Grant program to 38 creative, community driven organizations, working to bolster and improve outcomes for groups that have been historically left behind in STEM education and careers. Here are 10 tips — all based on science — about what tends to help us learn and remember most effectively. Six-in-ten U.S. adults say they would prefer to live in a community with larger homes with greater distances to retail stores and schools. We are also grateful to the team at Princeton Survey Research International who led the data collection efforts for the two surveys. The fieldwork for both surveys was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International. Contact with AAAS members invited to participate in the survey was managed by AAAS staff with the help of Princeton Survey Research Associates International; AAAS also covered part of the costs associated with mailing members.
There were two different office spaces and I would have liked to be in just one so I could get to know other people in the organization a bit better. As an alumna of the Science Talent Search, she is the the President & CEO and publisher of the award winning magazine, Science News. Maya attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and became involved in the mentorship program. Her project, “Isolation and Characterization of a Tetracycline Resistant Plasmid of an Animal Isolate, Streptococcus faecalis, SF2” was submitted to the Westinghouse Science Talent Search which is now sponsored by Regeneron.
